James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes, also known as the Winter Soldier, is a Marvel character whose MCU debut was in the film *Captain America: The Winter Soldier* (2014), portrayed by actor Sebastian Stan.
He was a close friend and ally of Steve Rogers (Captain America) during World War II. Presumed dead after falling from a train during a mission, Bucky was captured, brainwashed, and fitted with a cybernetic arm by Hydra, a Nazi splinter group, and spent decades as a deadly assassin.
As the Winter Soldier, he was a highly skilled operative, completing numerous missions for Hydra with no memory of his past. His path eventually crossed with Captain America, leading to the unraveling of his brainwashing and his slow recovery of his true identity. He fought as an ally during several world threatening events and ultimately received a pardon for his crimes from Wakanda.
